Building Reach & Amplifying Truth
Making fact-checking more visible, efficient and accessible
FACTory: Making fact-checking more visible, efficient and accessible
FACTory is a European project that helps fact-checking organisations develop AI-assisted workflows, new multimedia formats and stronger dissemination strategies.
The project brings together fact-checking teams from Germany, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and Romania. Together, they test how verified information can be transformed into formats that work better on today’s digital platforms. Because fact-checking works best when verified information reaches people where they actually consume content.
By combining editorial expertise, AI-supported production and cross-border cooperation, the project aims to increase the volume and diversity of verified information online, reduce production barriers for smaller teams, support responsible AI use in journalistic workflows, and strengthen resilience against disinformation across Europe.
FACTory is co-funded by the European Union under Call CNECT/2024/1910855.
What FACTory develops
FACTory works on practical tools and workflows that can be reused by fact-checking organisations beyond the consortium.
The consortium
The FACTory consortium combines editorial, fact-checking, technical, training and dissemination expertise across five European countries.
dpa is one of the world’s leading independent news agencies with around 1,000 journalists working from more than 150 locations in Germany and abroad. dpa is owned by 174 German media companies, ensuring its editorial independence from political, commercial, or governmental influence, as established in the agency’s statute. Its fact-checking department provides verification coverage in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The Timeline
Phase 1: Format development and AI-assisted workflow testing
Partners develop and test AI-supported workflows and new content formats. The goal is to improve production efficiency while maintaining editorial quality and factual accuracy.
Phase 2: Campaigns and dissemination
The consortium rolls out national campaigns and prepares a joint cross-border campaign. Dissemination partners help bring verified content to broader audiences.
Phase 3: Playbook and training
The project results are documented in the FACTory Playbook and shared through online training events for the wider European fact-checking community.
